Aim / objective
The project output will be a report with recommended tools and processes to enable non-accredited entrepreneurship skills and knowledge (developed during extra-curriculae learning activities and projects) to be better demonstrated to employers, enhancing a person’s employability.
Background / rationale
Employers have traditionally made student recruitment and promotion decisions based on academic qualifications and knowledge tests. However many employers find these do not predict successful employability. Employers are increasingly turning to onsite and offsite assessment centre processes to test practical skills before offering jobs. The new economy is obliging employers and employees to deliver more products and services with fewer resources. To achieve this employers are seeking wider skill sets. This project will people help promote their employability to operate in the new economy. It will make it easier for job applicants to show DEMONSTRABLE EVIDENCE of employability and entrepreneurial competencies such as
making and presenting, initiating and innovating, confidence and enthusiasm, hard work and persistence, marketing and selling, researching and developing, planning and project managing, resource management and process improvement.
The idea was funded by a grant from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce to promote the creative reuse of fashion and textiles.
The creation smashed the previous Guinness World Record, which measured 4ft high and 10ft 8in wide. The pompom will now be taken to a recycling plant where it will be broken down into natural fibres and spun into a giant ball of yarn which will eventually be used to make socks and the insides of jackets.
Sixth Formers at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy “BACA” have formed an
Entrepreneurs Club with support from local businesses and are helping design a
capability toolkit called Self Made Skills to promote student employability. The project is
being sponsored by the Royal Society of Arts Manufactures and Commerce as part of its
international Catalyst support for social entrepreneurs. The aim is to improve the way
employers, job hunters and start-ups identify the value of extra-curriculae experiences.
